Thai massage - History

There is a lot of debate over who founded the Thai massage. There are many who credit the great Buddhist physician from over 2,500 years ago, Shivago Komarpaj, who was Buddha’s personal doctor, with the development of the massage techniques.

Most Thai believe that thai massage was founded by the great Shivago Komarpaj, a legendary physician who was believed to have been Buddha’s personal doctor over 2,500 years ago. Komarpaj’s medical knowledge and ability are much talked about.

He was one of the greatest practitioners of herbal medicine and was the foremost physician of his times.

There are others that are of the opinion that Thai massage evolved over the years and is an amalgamation of the ancient philosophies of India, China and Southeast Asia.

The version of the Thai massage as we know it today was first developed in the 19th century. However, there is no single version of the Thai massage; it comes in several different variations and styles.

However, the history of Thai Yoga massage is a little more complex than that. It is believed that this ancient massage technique derives its influence from Indian, Chinese and countries in Southeast Asia.

Thai massage in Thailand

Thai massage is practiced in Thailand for the most part, but it derives its techniques and philosophies from ancient Indian Yoga and Ayurveda, as well as from other Buddhist principles.

There are two types of Thai massage, the traditional Thai massage – which is the variation of Thai massage that is commonly practiced - and the ancient Thai massage.

There is a big difference between the two. Ancient Thai massage begins with a mantra narrated by both the giver and receiver. It is practiced very rarely and many of the texts on which the ancient Thai massage was based on were lost during the war between Thailand and Burma, over one thousand years ago.
